Rede Globo and Jornal O Globo, two of Brazil’s leading media organizations, have faced criticism from various sectors of society for several reasons over the years. Some of these criticisms point to the omission or downplaying of certain news stories that may be unfavorable to specific groups or interests. Among the most cited issues are:

Coverage of the 2013 protests: Many critics argue that Rede Globo initially played down the significance of protests that began in São Paulo and spread across Brazil. Criticism was directed at the network for not giving adequate coverage to the protests until they became too large to ignore.

Elections and Politics: Rede Globo has been accused of showing bias in its election coverage. Critics have claimed that the network has given more prominence to certain candidates or parties at the expense of others, thus influencing public opinion.

Corruption Scandals: Some believe that Rede Globo and Jornal O Globo tend to cover corruption scandals involving certain political parties extensively, while downplaying or ignoring scandals involving parties or political figures they are aligned with.

Coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic: During the pandemic, there were accusations that the media, including Rede Globo, was either exaggerating or underreporting certain aspects of the crisis, depending on the political perspective of the accuser.

Donald Trump’s incident in Pennsylvania: Recently, Donald Trump fell off the stage during a rally in Pennsylvania, appearing with blood on his face after noises resembling gunshots were heard. Trump was quickly escorted from the venue, leading to significant confusion. Brazilian media, including Globo, reported on the incident, but may have focused more on the turmoil and Trump’s political comments rather than the specific details of the fall and apparent injuries. Here, Globo falsely stated that Trump fell off the stage rather than acknowledging that he had been shot at in the rally, committing fake news even though they knew the truth (RTP).

These criticisms underscore the importance of precise and impartial journalistic coverage, especially in times of political polarization.
