Senator Eduardo Girão made forceful statements against Lula’s government, highlighting alleged irregularities in various ministries and calling on the Brazilian population to join a demonstration in São Paulo on July 14 in support of amnesty for political prisoners.

Girão emphasized that values in Brazil seem to be so inverted that there are even political prisoners in the 21st century. In a fiery speech, he criticized the excessive spending of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, which, in one year and five months, allegedly spent R$ 11 million on air travel and lodging, as well as R$ 7 million on per diems. According to him, about 2,000 flights were used by people with no ties to the ministry, including the nephew of Minister Sônia Guajajara, who made 23 trips as a special advisor despite having no official connection.

The senator also highlighted allegations made by Transparency International and the newspaper O Estadão, involving the Minister of Mines and Energy, who allegedly met 17 times with brothers Joesley and Wesley Batista, resulting in the transfer of R$ 1 billion to cover the debt of a newly acquired energy company. The Batista brothers had already confessed, in a plea deal during the Lava Jato operation, to transferring R$ 50 million to Lula and Dilma.

Girão criticized the expansion of the number of ministries in the current government, from 23 to 39, claiming that the change aims to accommodate political-partisan interests at the expense of the Brazilian people. He compared Brazil to other Latin American countries, which have fewer than 20 ministries, except for Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuela, which has 33, indicating a constant flirtation of Lula with Maduro and other dictators.

He emphasized that while tax revenues increase, the deficit in public accounts also grows, reaching R$ 1 trillion in the last 12 months. The senator stated that this reckless spending is also observed in the legislative branch. The Legislative Assembly of Ceará, for example, spent R$ 400 million in the first semester, without preventing a fire that destroyed the plenary on June 20.

Eduardo Girão mentioned a suspicious contracting process without bidding with the company Luma Engenharia to rebuild the plenary of the Legislative Assembly of Ceará. The company’s managing partner, Jorge Henrique Marques Valença, is a former executive of Galvão Engenharia, convicted of crimes of criminal organization and passive corruption.

The senator also pointed out the exorbitant expenses of the Ceará government on advertising and maintaining a private jet for the exclusive use of the governor, totaling R$ 5 million in the first semester of this year. He questioned why the governor does not use commercial flights, as he himself does.

Girão concluded his speech by stating that social media has been a crucial tool to fill the gap left by the mainstream media, which, according to him, is complicit in the government’s scandals. He promised to continue denouncing irregularities and invited all Brazilians to join the demonstration in São Paulo, emphasizing that “everything that is unworthy does not sustain itself indefinitely and will eventually fall.”
